FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HYPNOSIS

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed state where a person may access their inner subconscious mind to provide suggestions for positive lasting change.

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis feels different for each person. It is generally characterized as an experience of very deep relaxation with feelings of lightness, floating, or other dream like feelings. In hypnosis, certain physiological changes occur. The body temperature lowers, the blood pressure decreases, and the person displays a sleep-like state, but is not asleep.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Anyone can be hypnotized provided they are willing and fully participating in the process.

Will you lose control of your mind if you are hypnotized?

While in a state of hypnosis the person is in complete control of themselves. They hear and understand everything that is said. Any suggestions that are in disagreement with the persons moral and ethical code - will not be accepted. In Stage Hypnosis the projected image is one of control over the volunteers, however, each volunteer is already expecting to be participating in some amusing form of behavior that is entertaining to others - otherwise they would not volunteer.

Is hypnosis a good substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment?

Hypnosis is NOT a substitute for any medical or psychiatric treatments. Hypnosis is a good complementary therapy in addition to some forms of treatment. However, it is always best to check with your doctor first when there are medical and/or psychiatric issues involved.

Is there a difference between Hypnotherapy and Stage hypnosis?

The main difference between hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis is the emphasis on entertainment. In hypnotherapy there are no antics or games. The client comes to hypnotherapy with a specific self-help goal - the hypnotherapist focuses only on helping the client to attain their goals. Stage Hypnosis is purely for entertainment purposes.

How legitimate is hypnosis as a complementary type of therapy?

Hypnosis was accepted by British Medical Authorities in 1955, and was also later accepted in the United States, in 1958, by the American Medical Association for therapeutic uses.
